It has more than 3,000 members who believe in "death with dignity" and an individual's right to self-determination. It is the only organization that publicly provides education on all end-of-life choices as well as a compassionate presence to those who are suffering from incurable diseases and have chosen to end their suffering. The organization has been instrumental in the changing laws in the death with dignity movement and works nationwide to effect change in state laws through the court system. Hanway will discuss the laws in Louisiana, and the current status of those laws throughout the United States, Canada, and Central and South America. The New Orleans Secular Humanist Association is dedicated to raising the awareness of people of the Gulf Coast region to the ideals and values of secular humanism.
