According to Kelley, Military records can provide much information. She says there are two basic record types: service records and pension records. But there are many types of records that are related to military service, ranging from letters home to burial arrangement to medals and honors.
Military records can be found at both the federal and state levels of jurisdiction, as well as locally in parish or town specific locations. Also, there is often much data on military conflicts, including information on those involved, in manuscripts.
Fold3 features collections of original records that include stories, photos and personal documents of the men and women who served in the military. Many of the records come from the U.S. National Archives, the National Archives of the U.K., and others.
The name Fold3 refers to the traditional flag folding ceremony that takes place at the burial of a veteran. The site is owned by Ancestry.com. The library offers subscribes this database and offers it free of charge to patrons.
During this presentation, Kelley will demonstrate how researchers access Fold3.
