Description:
The YMCA of Greater New Orleans will present ""Small Steps, Big Reward,"" a diabetes prevention program, on Mondays during 2018 at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon Ave., Metairie. This event is free of charge and open to the public. There is no registration. The YMCA's Diabetes Prevention Program helps overweight adults at risk for type 2 diabetes reduce their risk for developing disease by taking steps that will improve their overall health and well-being. Research by the National Institute of Health has shown that programs like the YMCA's Diabetes Prevention Program can reduce the number of new cases of type 2 diabetes by 58 percent and 71 percent in adults 60 years of age or older. The one-year program consists of 16 weekly sessions followed by monthly sessions. Each session occurs in a small supportive group environment. Participants will learn about healthier eating and the importance of increased physical activity to reduce risk. The goals of the program for each individual are to reduce body weight by seven percent and increase physical activity to 150 minutes of moderate (the equivalent of brisk walking) physical activity per week. To qualify, participants must be at least 18 years of age, be overweight (BMI¡Ý25), and be at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes or have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes.
