 J. Alexander Wieriman, PhD, will present “Treating Addictions: Progress and Recommendations,” at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 30, at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie.

This event is free of charge and open to the public.

Dr. Wieriman says that the United States has about 40,000 opioid-related deaths in 2017, and that New Orleans had 219 accidental drug-related deaths in 2017. He has recommendations for persons seeking addiction treatment and persons giving treatment, as well as recommendations for the federal and state governments that spend millions of dollars on this problem.

During this presentation, Dr. Wieriman will discuss the following topics.

• History of the problem.
• Types of treatment.
• Cognitive behavioral therapy.
• Drug therapy.
• Alcoholics Anonymous/Narcotics Anonymous.
• New approaches to drug addiction.
• Individual treatment.
• Cultural considerations.
