She will focus on the years 1814-1848, including the Bourbon Restoration, July Revolution, and the reign of Louis-Philippe. Dr. Perez holds a master’s degree in history from Southeastern Louisiana University, and a doctoral degree in history from Tulane University. The French Literature Discussion Group will discuss Stendhal’s The Red and the Black on four Monday nights during the fall of 2019 at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie. Each session is free of charge and is open to the public. There is no registration. The book is about 525 pages not counting the chronology, introduction and the appendixes. The Penguin Classic version is recommended. All reading and discussion is conducted in English. The Red and the Black focuses on handsome, ambitious Julien Sorel, who is determined to rise above his humble provincial origins. Soon realizing that success can only be achieved by adopting the subtle code of hypocrisy by which society operates, he begins to achieve advancement through deceit and self-interest. His triumphant career takes him into the heart of glamorous Parisian society, along the way conquering the gentle, married Madame de Rênal, and the haughty Mathilde. But then Julien commits an unexpected, devastating crime—and brings about his own downfall. Stendhal is the pen name of Henri Marie Beyle, who was born in Grenoble in 1783. The Red and the Black was his second novel, and he also produced or began three others, including The Charterhouse at Parma and Lucien Leuwen. None of his published works was received with any great understanding during his lifetime. 7 p.m., Monday, Sept. 23, 2019 Book One, Chapter 1 – A Small Town, to Book One, Chapter 22, Modes of Behaviour in 1830 (about 140 pages) 7 p.m., Monday Oct. 28, 2019 Book One, Chapter 23 – The Frustrations of a Public Servant to Book Two, Chapter 6, A Matter of Pronunciation (about 145 pages) 7 p.m., Monday, Nov. 18, 2019 Book Two, Chapter 7, An Attack of Gout, to Book Two, Chapter 23, The Clergy, Woodlands, Liberty (about 130 pages) 7 p.m., Monday, Dec. 16, 2019 Book Two, Chapter 24, Strasbourg, to Book Two, Chapter 45, which has no title (about 125 pages) For more information regarding this event, contact Chris Smith, Manager of Adult Programming for the library, at 504-889-8143 or wcsmith@jefferson.lib.la.us.
