The French Literature Discussion Group will discuss Stendhal’s The Red and the Black on four Monday nights during the fall of 2019 at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie.

Each session is free of charge and is open to the public. There is no registration.

The book is about 525 pages not counting the chronology, introduction and the appendixes. The Penguin Classic version is recommended.

All reading and discussion is conducted in English.

The Red and the Black focuses on handsome, ambitious Julien Sorel, who is determined to rise above his humble provincial origins. Soon realizing that success can only be achieved by adopting the subtle code of hypocrisy by which society operates, he begins to achieve advancement through deceit and self-interest. His triumphant career takes him into the heart of glamorous Parisian society, along the way conquering the gentle, married Madame de Rênal, and the haughty Mathilde. But then Julien commits an unexpected, devastating crime—and brings about his own downfall.

Stendhal is the pen name of Henri Marie Beyle, who was born in Grenoble in 1783. The Red and the Black was his second novel, and he also produced or began three others, including The Charterhouse at Parma and Lucien Leuwen. None of his published works was received with any great understanding during his lifetime.
