In another life, Taylor Swift might have been a literature professor instead of an award-winning singer, songwriter, and storyteller. The title of Swift's eleventh album, The Tortured Poets Department, continues her ongoing interest in the literary arts. This lecture from staff member Dr. Christie Cognevich will explore some of Swift's past literary references from William Wordsworth to Sylvia Plath, along with new allusions throughout the lyrics of her latest release. Come hear about the literary masterminds and tortured poets in Swift's canon, as well as how to think about Swift's lyrics like poetry.

Cognevich has a PhD in English literature from Louisiana State University, and she taught literature and writing at the university and high school level for over a decade. Her scholarly specialties include Romantic and Victorian literature. Additionally, she has an MFA in creative writing from the Vermont College of Fine Arts. She is the author of several YA non-fiction books including the upcoming Introverts: Insights and Tips for Teenagers (available for pre-order, release September 2024).
